Most models work in the commercial print industry posing, for photographs that will be used to advertise products in magazines, digital ads, retail catalogs and TV commercials. Aspiring high-end fashion and runway models must meet strict height, weight, age and size requirements. Commercial models aren’t held to such strict standards, but being beautiful can be advantageous, because all modeling is competitive.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Commercial models hired to wear retail clothing must fit into the
modeling industry’s standard sample size, which fits trim women 5’6 to 5’11 and
men 5’9 to 6’2. Physical requirements for print and digital ad models,
plus-size models, fitness models, and hand and foot models, vary according to
the specifications of the client seeking model talent. Sometimes, average
looking people are hired as models to make it easier for the general public to
relate to the ad or commercial.
Boutique designers hire tall, lanky models to show off their fashions.
When svelte fashion models wear clothes, their wispy body frame enables fabric
to drape freely and flow. Female fashion models must be from 5 feet 8 inches
tall to 6 feet tall and from 90 to 120 pounds. Most are approximately 5 feet 10
inches. Male fashion models are between 5 feet 9 inches tall to 6 feet 2
inches, and from 120 to 170 pounds. Most are at least 5 feet 11 inches tall.
WORK LOCATION
Commercial models live in areas where reputable modeling agents are
located. Although it is possible to land gigs as a freelancer, most commercial
models sign with a commission-based model management agency that promotes their
photo portfolio to clients.
Fashion models enjoy celebrity status and often appear in fashion hubs
around the world. A top model spends many hours in airplanes flying to exciting
cities for fashion shows showcasing famous designers. They visit many other
cities to endorse products, attend galas, support fundraising events and pose
for magazines like Vogue.
JOB AVAILABILITY
The life of a commercial model is similar to that of an actor. They may
experience steady employment for long stretches of time, followed by episodic
unemployment. No educational requirements are needed to model, so it’s a wide
open field. Competition for jobs is fierce and models must always look their
best. Job opportunities favor those open to doing many different types of work,
such as modeling nude in art studios or promoting clothes at a trade show.
Fashion models lead an exciting but exhausting life. Offers for modeling
jobs, photo shoots and endorsements may exceed a popular fashion model’s
availability. Supermodels can pick and choose which engagements to accept. When
a special opportunity suddenly arises, they must be ready to jump on a plane
and fly anywhere in the world.
PAY
The typical model does not earn anywhere near the money of high fashion models. Some commercial models may work another part-time job to make ends meet. Fashion models have much higher earning power. For instance, fashion model Kendall Jenner reportedly made $22 M in 2017, including all her ingenious marketing, TV and social media ventures.
